Naomi Campbell: People try to use your past to blackmail you. I wont allow it

Late and distracted by her phone, the model soon transforms from hauteur to warmth. She discusses racism, Vogue, stereotypes of black women and how, at 47, shes finally become comfortable in her own skin At a big and ritzy Halloween party in New York two Saturdays ago, a lot of highly famous people dressed up as other highly famous people. Naomi Campbell, however, went as herself. Why deign to masquerade as some lesser being when you are already an internationally acknowledged apogee of fabulousness? In a gold strapless mini dress and a crown bigger than the one Beyonc wore at the Grammys, the 47-year-old supermodel was approached by more than one party guest who had come in costume as Naomi Campbell. Bootsy Collins: LSD was a big part of why I left James Browns band

The musician, 66, tells Candice Pires about free love, Funkadelic, coming to earthly consciousness and getting away from being Bootsy My mother never said to me: You cant do that. When it came to finishing high school or going on the road with James Brown, I decided to go. She knew I wasnt really choosing anything harmful. She just wanted me to have fun with whatever I was doing. She was my backbone. You have to be detached from things in order to really love them, and know that theyre not yours. I can say: Youre mine, but thats not true; when I go, I go and when you go, you go. I came up in the days of free love, so its easier for me to lock into that. LSD was a big part of why I left James Browns band. I promised myself Id never do it during […] Read more »

This August, it was the turn of Alecia Moore, known since she was a teenager as Pink. When she came up on stage at the VMAs to accept it, she didnt do the usual thank-yous. American Made review maverick Tom Cruise feels the need for speed in flashy thriller

A grinning Cruise is back in Top Gun territory in Doug Limans sort-of-true story about a bored pilot who starts working for a Colombian cartel and the CIA Youd need a heart of stone not to indulge Tom Cruises midlife return to Top Gun antics in this flashy, entertaining crime thriller by director Doug Liman, featuring Tom with blindingly toothy grin and sunglasses whizzing around in his light aircraft with US Customs agents riding his tail (to quote Roger Avary). Its based on the sort-of-true-ish story of a former TWA pilot who in 1984 was arrested for gun-running, money-laundering and carrying drugs in his plane for Colombias Medelln Cartel. He cut a deal to incriminate bigger players and claimed he had been involved with government intelligence agencies from the outset this movie sportingly takes him at his word. Cruise plays Barry Seal, competent but bored airline pilot and impeccable husband […] Read more »

Original supermodels assemble for catwalk tribute to Gianni Versace

Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen and Carla Bruni in Donatella Versaces Milan show Of everything Gianni Versace gave to popular culture he invented the celebrity front row, the metal mesh cocktail dress and arguably the career of Elizabeth Hurley, who might never have found fame were it not for That Dress the supermodel is his greatest legacy. So it was a fitting tribute that a supermodel reunion was the centrepiece of the Versace show staged to mark the 20th anniversary of his murder. Versace invented the supermodel, plucking a few chosen models from the runway ranks and elevating them to a higher strata of glamour. Other models remained humble clothes horses, but this elite became goddesses. Versace, who was already conjuring the imagery of classical goddesses with his becomingly draped dresses, created the perfect women to wear them. Prints charming: models in signature Versace style. Antonio Lopez: the fashion illustrator who revolutionised the industry

The subject of a new documentary, Sex, Fashion and Disco, Lopez was best friends with Karl Lagerfeld, advocated diversity long before woke-ness was in fashion and had dance moves that can only be described as legendary There cant be many fashion illustrators who can count Jessica Lange, Grace Jones and Karl Lagerfeld as their BFFs, and Jerry Hall as their one-time bae. But Antonio Lopez was special as the new film, Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex, Fashion and Disco testifies. An illustrator who started out in the mid-60s (when he dropped out of college to work for Womens Wear Daily), the Puerto Rican-born artist bucked the trend for photography as the dominant medium in fashion media. This was through sheer talent. In his work for the New York Times, Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, the whooshes of his lines, movement of his drawings and the confident, sexy poses of the models he […] Read more »

Rihanna's third-annual Diamond Ball was a celebrity-filled spectacle and so much more

Image: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Clara Lionel Foundation It was a wonderful night. Jay-Z mingled with fellow tuxedo-clad guests. Beyoncé delicately dabbed her face with the finest of cloth napkins. Leonardo DiCaprio looked off in the distance as someone conversed with him. Kendrick Lamar handed me a microphone (yes, you read that right) and Cardi B's four assistants gathered her dress to help the "Bodak Yellow" queen make her way through the ballroom full of tables at Rihanna’s third annual Diamond Ball. In the middle of it all sat a 29-year-old Barbados born woman who needs no introduction, especially following the week she’s had launching an impressively successful (and inclusive) makeup launch and showing her Fenty Puma Spring 2018 collection during New York Fashion Week.  With all that is going on in her life, it’s easy to forget that the Robyn Rihanna Fenty does more than set trends, release party […] Read more »
